House Style

The house style of the music magazine that I will be producing will be consistent throughout. In doing so I will be using similar fonts, colours and layouts so that it is continuous but also different to portray the meaning of that feature.I feel that this should be done so that it will apply to my brand identity of my music magazine as i would like a sense of professionalism and also so that it will not be too dull. The fonts that I would take inspiration from to use in my magazine will be appropriate for my target audience being bold and classic, for example Georgia and Arno Pro caption, With this is gives the reader a sense of maturity but also still having an edgy style to it. The colours in with the main feature so that it is visible and does not clash.I will use colours that will be for both genders and will attract my target audience.

Music Magazine Masthead Ideas

The Music Magazine that I am going to produce is named Broken Record. This is the name I have chosen because the genre of the magazine is going to be popular music which is played constantly time after time by many people like a broken record, which people tend to enjoy. I will redefine the negative connotations of the magazines name. The magazine will be vibrant and entertaining for readers and could include many features like interviews with mainstream artists, reviews on songs and upcoming music events. The magazine will be unique because I know what the target audience of teenagers would like in a music magazine and a general understanding of what the age range of mid 30’s like. Therefore, I will include features in which will attract them.

Moodboard for Artists/Bands Featured

Above are similar artists that I wish to take inspiration from to be included in my magazine. This is because all of the artists produce a different style of music but are popular to the public eye. They fit in with the pop magazine as they are popular artists and most people like there music. They also are in the charts most popular and bring there own sense of style that my target audience may want to take inspiration from. For example, Kanye west is an amazing artist with his own brand image that most people are able to buy. With this his music is also very popular and himself and the family that he has married into. The artists above are known by my target audience of 15-35 year olds for both girls and boys which many people idolise and are fans of.

Classical Music Magazine Analysis (different genre)

I analysed a classical music magazine as it provides me with features that differ from a pop magazine. I found that my music magazine would be different from this as the target audience is very different to mine therefore features on this magazine would be different and appropriate for them. Compared to this magazine I would like my masthead to be bolder and bigger like billboard magazine. I would like only one image on the cover with cover lines instead of smaller images as I think it looks more professional and appropriate for my target audience. Also because I want the main feature to be the most important image on the page. Over all I would take little inspiration from this magazines due to that fact that the two genres of music clash and are promoted in different ways with different texts and features.

Brand Identity and Values for Music Magazine

I would like the magazine to stand out and have a sense of professionalism to it. I would like it to be creative and give a factor in which other music magazines are unable to show. I would like it to be the genre of the magazine to be POP as I feel like I can relate more to this genre and include things that I am confident in producing with the right knowledge.
The magazines in which I would be influenced by are Billboard, Q , cosmopolitan and other magazines like this. These would be influential because they have popular music featured with different artists that produce a different genre of music that are popular to the public eye. With this it will guide me to produce my music magazines and give me a head start.
The brand that I would like the music magazine to be known as is a popular, entertaining and professional as I feel that it would be more effective for the target audience of 16 to 35 year olds as it will give the teenage age range a sense of maturity as well as fitting in with the 35 year olds.
My magazines passions and interests are to captivate the reader and give them information they are looking for that is not boring but entertaining and fun. The magazine will be formal but not extremely formal that it doesn’t attract the young target audience. This is because it will give it a sense of professionalism and is like Billboard which I took influence by.

School Magazine Evaluation

Who would be the audience for your media product?
The target audience for my school magazine is ages through 11-18 which is the age range of Plantsbrook school students. My magazine is appropriate for this age range as it includes many features in which they know about and can relate to like the homework and exam tips which all students need for their school lives which consists of exams and homework. They also involved in the social media world which consumes their lives so the section on popular apps, celebrity gossip and the epic watch list would be appropriate for them as it adds more things to the magazine that they are interested in and would make it more entertaining and not just educational also. To appeal to my target audience through my design of the magazine I used fonts that are not boring so that it catches there attention. I also made it bright and bold which is why the photograph cover is bright so that everything on it stands out.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
I have learnt about many technologies through the process of making my school magazine like how to use adobe fireworks to create my magazine. I learnt about the many functions of the software to make the magazine and to  set things in place and edit the features. At first it was difficult but further on developing the magazine I became more comfortable and comfortable with the software. I also learnt how to use blogger which allowed me to upload my work on to it. At first I was unsure on how to work the blog but now I know how to make posts, edit posts and improve them.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a school magazine?

My media product uses the conventions of a usual school magazine. Firstly because of the image used on the front cover is a photo of a student in which most school magazines portray using documentary ph0totgraphy. The reason for this is because it went well with the cover and the text was easy to place dues to high lighting of a wall allowing clear text to be seen. It also links with the whole magazine as it shows a student getting involved in helping the school showing their enjoyment in the school. Also,  following the conventions of a magazine cover my masthead is positioned at the top of the page because it is more visible there and will be able to attract the students. This conforms to the conventions of a school magazine because most magazines mastheads are placed typically at the top. The colour scheme of the magazine goes with the colour scheme of the school in which most school magazines convey as it shows that it is part of the school. However, it does challenge some conventions as it includes features in which are not all academic but has some sense of entertainment it.

Music Magazine Target Audience:

The music magazine that I am going to produce is going to be based on popular music that everyone has heard and is on the charts, it includes various different artists that may make different styles of music like for example Billboard magazine. POP music borrows elements from many music genres. I have chosen this genre as I feel that I am more familiar with POP music and can identify what will be appropriate to include in my magazine. I feel as though the magazine will appeal to a mixed age range from teenagers to adults in their mid-30’s both male and female. This is because they listen to music genres that I would feature in the magazine as it is the most popular due to the fact that they are open to it from the radio, TV and in film productions. To appeal to this target audience, I would look at different POP magazines like Billboard, Q and other magazine that promote pop music such as seventeen and glamour. I would identify what stand out upon those magazines and take inspiration from them to give an idea of what the magazine can include. Also, I believe that with what the artists wear and the brands that they promote influence the target audience as in the magazine they wear items of clothing that people take inspiration from and wear brands like Nike, Adidas, Vans, Topshop and sometimes brands produced by famous celebrities like Kanye west and his Yeezy and Pablo collection. Most of the brands are expensive but affordable to my target audience. Therefore within my magazine I would want my artists to wear recognisable brands. I would like the magazine to appeal to people who like The Weeknd, Kanye west, Shawn Mendes, Stormzy, Ariana Grande, Beyonce and other mainstream artists, in which my target audience know. All of these artists produce different genres of music and produce popular music. I would like to include artists like the ones above all different to one another. In my magazine I would like to include many features such as interviews with artists, the music that is currently popular, upcoming music events, brand promotions, style and clothing tips and much more.

School Magazine Designs

In the process of constructing my magazine covers I thought carefully about my target audience in which are 11-18 year olds that are in education. I felt that it had to be eye catching and bold for them to want to pick the magazine up and read it.
To produce the covers I used the Fireworks software which allowed me to change the different areas into different colours and enhancing different features.
Before starting the cover I researched what different magazine covers display and the reason behind it and how it had relevancy to the target audience and what the magazine was promoting.  I then thought of what could be in the magazine and why it would be appropriate so that I was able to add text to the cover to give an insight into what the magazine would include. In this I concluded that having articless that involve homework and revision tips would be relevant as every student has experience with this topic and then a more entertaining section like films and TV programmes to endure in, which consumes most of the younger generation,  along with other topics.
Firstly, I created a masthead in which I thought would be effective and would reflect what the magazine is offering along with the school it is promoting. I then decided the positions of the masthead, text, lures etc. I placed them in areas that I felt were easy to see and read as the target audience need to clearly see what is being shown to them. I created each piece of text on the cover in a different font so that it conveyed what the text was showing, for example like ‘Halloween costume ideas’, the font used was a horror themed font. I did this because I felt that the typography on covers portray the type of people that read the magazine, I felt that having different font styles would make it more fun and enjoyable to look at which is suitable for my target audience as it is not boring and dull ,I felt it made the magazine less serious.

I decided to keep one of the covers masthead black with little colour so that the image in the background would have bright lighting not only emphasising the masthead but also the feature and the other texts on the page.

Contents Page

First Attempt:
Final design:

To create the school magazine contents page I researched what aspects make a good page and found out what features to add. I used images to show what articles will be in the magazine along with texts so that it is not just and overload of text and is eye catching. I used vibrant colours that go with the colours of Plantsbrook which also highlights the special section more. I used different fonts for the titles and the other text so that it can easily be differentiated from one another.

School Photography Convention Ideas

These school documentary photographs were used as inspiration for the type of photography I would like to include in my school magazine. I have done this so that I have knowledge of what kind of photographs i should take which are for school purposes. I learnt that all the photographs are shots of students doing things which relates to students.

I took photographs that has aspects of student life in and added cover lines and other features in places that were appropriate for the magazine. I took inspiration from different magazines to know how to position things and get a general idea. I created a masthead first and then the coverlines that would stand out and be appropriate for the magazine.

School Magazine Photographs

In taking these photographs I looked at school documentary photographs to gain knowledge and inspiration. I took images that included educational resources and aspects of a students life which include conventions of a school magazine so that it is suitable for the target audience. I took the photographs inside of the school as it is a magazine for Plantsbrook so that it shows this. I thought of the front over of the magazine so that all of the photographs were appropriate for the positions of the  coverlines and the masthead and other conventions of a school magazine.

Magazine Cover Layouts

Above are my magazine cover designs. I feel that each of my well thought out designs are varied and include features in which are unique as well as following conventions of a cover. What I consider important within the cover of a magazine is the main image/feature which is usually the aspect that stands out most along with the masthead. This to me is important because it is the feature people see first and what makes them pick up the magazine on the shelf as they may recognize the person on the front and may be a fan of them or they may be doing something that catches their attention. With this, this is why the main image takes up the whole page and is always bigger than the other features around it. I would like people to view the magazine as fun,  entertaining, bold and over all different to other magazines. This is because it will make them want to engage in it. I also want people to view it as professional but effective as none of the covers are dull and boring.  I would like the main image on the cover to be vibrant and bold because it is what people tend to see first. I would like the image to represent what the magazine is advertising, tying everything on the cover together. With text I feel that the biggest text in the page should be the masthead first to show the brand image and then the headline, pull quotes and lure which my cover designs effectively show. This is because it catches the attention of the readers and makes them want to look inside to find out more. Ans also follws the conventions of a magazine.

School Magazine Moodboard

Ideas that I may include in my school magazine.

What to watch: In the magazine I could include popular things teenagers like to watch in their free time and what they could potentially watch. I think that this will be effective because many adolescents watch TV shows and tend to 'binge' watch them and talk about it through social media like twitter. It also gives them a chance to socialise with people by discussing what they think of it and the current story line which I myself do among others.

Revision and homework tips: This will keep the magazine an academic magazine as well as a fun and entertaining one. This would be useful to students as they always get told to revise and do homework through the academic year and it would be a helpful section for them and would be aimed at all years and age groups.

Useful apps: Social media and gaming apps consume students lives, having a section in which gives details of what apps are popular is suitable for the target audience and gives them ideas of what to engage in and have fun with specially social media apps like snap chat or twitter and games like Pokemon Go which is extremely popular. This also gives them a chance to talk about it to others.

Music festivals: would be appropriate to add to the magazine as many students go to concerts are infatuated my music from all types of genres and the celebrities that make the music.

Prom Ideas: For pupils in the older years giving them ideas of what to wear and where to go and price ranges etc this is appropriate as it is a big part of their lives.

Why I chose media studies.

I chose media because I think I will gain a different perspective of the outside world whilst also gaining a set of new skills. I find it very interesting because it has started to play a part of my generation’s daily lives.

The skills that I will gain are the ability to analyse and determine what the media is trying to sell and advertise to us. I will have a different outlook to others who have no actual interest in the inside of the media and just see it as a magazine or advert etc. It will help me in the future if I am able to work in the media business as I will know the best techniques to promote to the appropriate audience and will know how their minds see the media.
Media Studies will also help me develop number of skills like an ability to analyse how media products are constructed, how to produce media products across different platforms, how to do individual research  and how to evaluate my own media products and those of others.

Overall, I have a vast interest in the media from having social media, reading magazines and watching different types of entertainment through a screen. I have become captivated by the media as it controls and changes the way we see things. It has become normality for me and without it, it would be extremely difficult.

Although the media provides a positive aspect to lives, it also brings negatives. For example, they can lie to manipulate and control people into believing in things that are hoaxes, deterring people away from their own views and what is actually true. Moreover, the media prepares a base for things like conspiracy theories (which I enjoy reading even though it may be twisted) to grow and scaring people into believing what the media has falsely created through the millions of people who have access to it.

Many of us, like myself, are able to access all types of media through gadgets e.g. phones, tablets and laptops. We interact with the media on a daily basis without even realizing as we are surrounded by it.

By choosing media studies I can look deeper into it and change the way I look at things, possibly for the better. Being able to analyse and explain details of the media will allow me to understand why the media does what it does.
Not only will the media give me new skills but it will allow me to enjoy my education as it allows me to be creative and is actually fun. Media studies is something I enjoy learning about and it is a subject that plays to my strengths.

Overall, media studies will help me develop three relationships with the media. As a ‘consumer I will become more aware of the many ways in which media messages are presented to me, as well as discovering how the institutions which produce and distribute media products are trying to reach me. The subject will help my evaluation skills, which will give me a -hands on understanding of both how media messages are created and what they are aiming to do.
